Why cleaning can hurt collector value
A brighter surface is not automatically a better collectible. Cleaning, pressing and repairs can remove evidence of original condition and create permanent risk.
Cleaning leaves visible evidence
Wiping, polishing, acid treatment and chemical cleaning can leave hairlines, an unnatural shine, colour breaks or disturbed toning. Buyers and graders may recognize these changes.
Grading may record the problem
A genuine coin can receive a Details, Cleaned or Surface Hairlines designation. The issue can affect market acceptance even when the coin itself is authentic.
Protect banknotes too
Flattening, washing, trimming, recolouring or repairing paper can also affect grade and value. Preserve the original paper, corners and handling history.
Safer preparation
Before appraisal, sale or submission, keep the item in its current state. Use an appropriate holder, avoid moisture and sunlight, and handle the surface as little as possible.
